Matt Reeves’ final film in the rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy took over the top spot at the weekend box office, opening with $56.5 million. While this is a solid total for the summer blockbuster season, the film still comes in a bit shy of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which raked in $72.6 million in its first weekend.
In second place, Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man Homecoming fell 61% to the number 2 spot with a weekend total of $45.2 million. This after a pretty incredible opening weekend. Homecoming‘s weekend drop is higher than both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Wonder Woman which experienced a 56% drop off and a 43% drop off respectively. Its domestic gross total now stands at $208.3 million.
Moving on, Despicable Me 3 ranked at 3rd place, earning $18.9 million which brings its domestic total to $188 million. Baby Driver, directed by Edgar Wright, came in fourth place with $8.8 million. The film stands as Wrights most profitable film and one of his best. Finally at number 5 its The Big Sick, which is based on the true love story of Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon. The film brought in $8.8 million.
After spending five weeks in the top 5, Wonder Woman finally dropped to sixth place with $6.7 million, increasing its domestic total to $380 million.
