I… I don’t even know where to begin with this one. Suicide Squad may not have given Jared Leto’s Joker much screen time but, if this rumor is proven to be true, then Warner Bros. obviously still have plans for the character.
In a recent report by ScreenRant, Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a DCEU film centred on Harley Quinn and The Joker. The film, apparently titled Harley Quinn Vs The Joker would feature the return of Margot Robbie and Jared Leto and would take place after Robbie’s turn in David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens.
The project will apparently be produced by Geoff Johns and is set in the DC Extended Universe. The film currently has no rumored release date or a director in mind. Screenrant speculates that an announcement could occur at tomorrow’s DC panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
It has become quite apparent that the DCEU is looking at building the Batman side of the franchise. A Nightwing, Batgirl and a trilogy of standalone Batman films are in development along with Gotham City Sirens. In addition, Suicide Squad 2 is also rumored to be happening with Will Smith and Margot Robbie returning.
There is no hint at what kind of story a Harley Quinn Vs The Joker film could have but, again if this proves to be true, look to GCS to potentially set up a future conflict between the violent lovers. There’s also no statement on where this could possibly fit in the ever-growing DCEU slate as it has recently been confirmed that the next DC film to shoot would be Shazam!
With Ben Affleck’s future with DC in question, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to think that DC is looking to grow the Gotham universe so that it wouldn’t have to soley focus on Batman. Take this all with a grain of salt for now, but personally, I liked Jared Leto’s Joker so more of him in the DCEU is a win for me.
