Godzilla Vs. Kong: Director Adam Wingard on Wanting the Audience To Be ‘Emotionally Invested’

Written By: Nick Poulimenakos

The MonsterVerse has been kicked into high gear with the release of the smash hit film, Kong: Skull Island. The film re-introduced viewers to one of cinema’s most famous characters, King Kong, and earned critical acclaim along with $566 million at the worldwide box office. Now, the franchise is getting ready to, not only release the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but also, Godzilla Vs. Kong, which has Adam Wingard at the helm.

Recently, Wingard sat down with Screen Crush to discuss the massive team-up film and it’s clear that he doesn’t want this project to be just another mindless monster movie.

“I really want you to take those characters seriously. I want you to be emotionally invested, not just in the human characters, but actually in the monsters. If I had my way, I want people to really be teary-eyed at the end of the movie, and be that invested in to what’s going on.”

Now, that’s not to say that the film won’t be without its huge battles. As Wingard puts it, the film will have classic monster brawls.

“It’s a massive monster brawl movie. There’s lots of monsters going crazy on each other, but at the end of the day I want there to be an emotional drive to it. I want you to be emotionally invested in them. I think that’s what’s going to make it cool.”

Well consider me excited. As a fan of monster movies, it’s reassuring to see how passionate Wingard is about the project. The film isn’t due to be released for a couple of years so he has time to craft a truly emotional and exciting entry into the MonsterVerse. Hopefully, like Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island, the end result will be a lot of fun.

Godzilla Vs. Kong  is set to be released on March 22, 2019.
