More Details Emerge On Colin Trevorrow’s ‘Star Wars Episode IX’ Exit

Colin Trevorrow signing on to direct the last film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy was a decision that received a mixed reaction from fans. Now, Trevorrow and Lucasfilm announced that they had parted ways and Star Wars: Episode IX would be getting a rewrite from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child scribe, Jack Thorne. Rumors have been swirling as to why Disney and Lucasfilm decided to boot Trevorrow from the film and now, we have more supposed information to share.

Vulture recently posted an article where they claim an anonymous source, who has familiarity with Trevorrow’s recent film projects, Jurassic World and The Book of Henry, explained to them that Trevorrow as a director was not humble and particularly headstrong when it came to making decisions.

“During the making of Jurassic World, he focused a great deal of his creative energies on asserting his opinion. But because he had been personally hired by Spielberg, nobody could say, ‘You’re fired.’ Once that film went through the roof and he chose to do Henry, [Trevorrow] was unbearable. He had an egotistical point of view— and he was always asserting that. When the reviews for Book of Henry came out, there was immediately conjecture that Kathy was going to dump him because they weren’t thrilled with working with him anyway. He’s a difficult guy. He’s really, really, really confident. Let’s call it that.”

Now, obviously I’ll say to take this all with a grain of salt, as the source’s identity has been kept secret. But, from the report, it would seem that Trevorrow’s recent lackluster critical and commercial response to The Book of Henry wasn’t the reason for his Star Wars exit. It was the fact that he can’t humble himself and likes to make his opinions know whether Lucasfilm liked them or not. Which can obviously be summed up as… creative differences. The source then said that Trevorrow rubbed Kathleen Kennedy the wrong way and that was the final straw.

“There’s one gatekeeper when it comes to Star Wars and it’s Kathleen Kennedy. If you rub Kathleen Kennedy the wrong way — in any way — you’re out. You’re done. A lot of these young, new directors want to come in and say, ‘I want to do this. I want to do that.’ A lot of these guys — Lord and Miller, Colin Trevorrow — got very rich, very fast and believed a lot of their own hype. And they don’t want to play by the rules. They want to do sh*t differently. And Kathleen Kennedy isn’t going to f*ck around with that.”

Lucasfilm has quite a bit of time to settle on a new director for Episode IX as filming doesn’t begin until next year. Rumors point to J.J Abrams and Rian Johnson, directors of Star Wars Episode VII and Episode VIII respectively, being courted to come back for the grande finale.
