James Cameron on How He Convinced Linda Hamilton To Return to the ‘Terminator’ Franchise

The Terminator franchise hasn’t made a good film since James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Following the film, Cameron left the franchise along with series lead Linda Hamilton and what came after were three panned sequels. Now, Cameron has decided to return to the franchise he started and is producing a brand new Terminator reboot with Deadpool director, Tim Miller, at the helm. But, that’s not all. It was recently announced that Linda Hamilton will return as Sarah Connor and now, Cameron is opening up about bringing his ex-wife back into the Skynet fold.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron opened up about building up the courage to ask Hamilton to come back for Terminator 6. But before he could talk, Miller jumped in to give a funny answer:

“Jim was fucking terrified.”

Well, that’s a rather blunt response. Cameron did however set the record straight as he continued on Miller’s point:

“I was. It took me a week just to get up the nerve. No, that’s not true. Linda and I have a great relationship. I called her up, and I said: ‘Look, we could rest on our laurels. It’s ours to lose, in a sense. We created this thing several decades ago. But, here’s what can be really cool. You can come back and show everybody how it’s done,'” he said. “Because in my mind, it hasn’t been done a whole lot since the way she did it back in ’91.”

Fans were introduced to Hamilton’s badass cyborg fighter all the way back in 1984’s Terminator and reprised the role in the sequel, Judgement Day.

Cameron noted that Hamilton’s age was actually a factor in bringing her back as it adds to the appeal of reviving the character. Miller continued by saying that Hamilton’s return is going to:

“…make a huge fucking statement to have her be the really seasoned warrior that she’s become.”

Cameron ended the interview by comparing older male action starts who keep getting action roles and he feels it’s time for older women to make their mark in the action genre:

There are certainly plenty of 50-, 60-, 70-something guys out there that just keep cranking along doing action movies and killing bad guys left and right. But there isn’t an example of that for women, and I think there should be.”

James Cameron’s and Tim Miller’s Terminator Reboot does not have a release date but keep it locked on Talkies Network for all the latest news regarding this anticipated film!
