Disney Reportedly In Talks to Buy Assets of 21st Century Fox

In what might be the biggest news story of the day, The Walt Disney Company is reportedly in talks to purchase most of 21st Century Fox.

In an exclusive report by CNBC, Disney is apparently holding meetings about buying most (not all) of 21st Century Fox. Now, by most, we mean that Disney is not looking to purchasing the news and sports divisions of the company. Here’s what they are looking at.

The on-again, off-meetings have revolved around Disney buying the film and television divisions which would include 20th Century Fox. This monumental deal could potentially bring Marvel’s X-Men and Fantastic Four properties over to the Disney-owned Marvel Studios. Much like Warner Bros. (who owns all DC Comics characters), fans have been patiently waiting for Marvel to regain the rights to all of their characters and Disney making this deal could finally see that dream come to life.

In addition, Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars, would regain the rights for home releases of their original trilogy theatrical cuts.

CNBC is reporting that Fox’s senior management is apparently looking into having a tighter focus on sports and news and selling the entertainment division could lead to this.

The article further speculates that, due to the rise of streaming companies such as Netflix and Amazon, Fox feels that they are not a big enough media company to compete in the always-changing entertainment environment.

Disney is not allowed to own two broadcast companies (they already own ABC) so the proposed deal would not include the Fox broadcast network (home to shows such as The SimpsonsBrooklyn Nine-Nine and Family Guy). But, channels that could be included are FX and National Geographic.

In addition to the films listed above, Disney would also gain various other popular film franchises such as the Alien series and the critically acclaimed rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy.

The actual price for the sale has not yet been learned. Given that not all of 21st Century Fox’s divisions would not be up for sale, it is also unclear has to how Fox would mitigate the potential tax consequences of the deal.

Do you think Disney and Marvel shoudl regain the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties? Let us know in the comments down below!
