Breaking news! The official Star Wars website has announced that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, has signed on to develop a brand new Star Wars trilogy!

Disney has tapped that director to structure the next three films and has also brought in Johnson’s main producer Ram Bergman to work on the massive project. Johnson has been confirmed to be writing and directing the first installment in the trilogy.

In an official statement by Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, she spoke about why Johnson is great choice to lead the new trilogy:

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

In a joint statement, Johnson and Bergman expressed their excitement for moving on to another Star Wars project:

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

I can’t even begin to describe how exciting this is. Johnson has been a fan-favourite amongst the Star Wars fandom. From the trailers alone, The Last Jedi looks to be the most exciting chapter in the Skywalker Saga yet as Johnson looks to reinvent the franchise while still respecting the past. As of now, no details have been released on the new trilogy but stay locked on Talkies Network for all the latest Star Wars news!

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theatres on December 15, 2017.
