In 2020, Indiana Jones will make his grand return to the big screen with Steven Spielberg at the helm as director and Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. The fifth adventure is scheduled to begin production next April and now, Spielberg is speaking out on the future of the franchise.

In an interview with The Sun, Spielberg stated that the upcoming film will be Ford’s final time playing the famous archaeologist and commented on the future of the franchise once Ford retires from the role.

Spielberg discussed how he believes it is time for the titular adventurer to take a “different form” and suggested that a woman could lead the franchise into the future:

“We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan. And there would be nothing wrong with that.”

The 71-year-old has been a vocal champion of the Time’s Up campaign for gender equality in the entertainment industry — and is no stranger to powerful women. His mother Leah, who passed away last year aged 97, raised him and his three sisters almost single-handedly because his workaholic engineer father Arnold, now 101, was rarely around.

In any case, Spielberg believes Indy’s fifth journey mark Ford’s final time playing the role:

“This will be Harrison Ford’s last Indiana Jones movie, I am pretty sure, but it will certainly continue after that.”

Spielberg will direct the fifth Indiana Jones film from a screenplay written by David Koepp. John Williams, who composed the music for all 4 of Indy’s adventures, will return to write the score.

Indiana Jones 5 flies into theatres on July 10, 2020.
