David Leitch, the director behind Atomic Blonde and the upcoming Deadpool sequel has found his next project.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Leitch has officially signed on to direct the yet-to-be titled Fast & Furious spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Universal is said to be going with the title “Hobbs and Shaw” for the project.
Leitch is working from a script by Chris Morgan, who has written six Fast & Furious films, including the most recent installment, The Fate of the Furious. The film follows former Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs as he forms an unlikely partnership with enemy-turned-friend, Deckard Shaw.
Production on the spin-off could be getting underway as early as this September. Universal is looking to begin principal photography that month with filming taking place in Atlanta, Georgia, Hawaii and the United Kingdom.
The Hobbs and Shaw spin-off is set to hit theaters on July 26, 2019, followed by The Fast and the Furious 9 on April 10, 2020.
