Not long after DC announced Ava DuVernay would direct The New Gods, based on the Jack Kirby comic of the same name and set in the DCEU, Marvel announced that they would adapt another similar Kirby comic, The Eternals. Based on the fictional race, Marvel hopes to launch a new cosmic franchise following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and now, they have found the writers for the film.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Matthew and Ryan Firpo have been hired to develop The Eternals script for Marvel. The duo is best known for their spec script Ruin which made the Black List in 2017.
In the comics, the Eternals are a fictional evolutionary offshoot of humanity who possess superpowers and longer lifespans than normal humans. Created by the Celestials (who were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) over a million years ago, the superpowered beings were the result of genetic experiments that led to the creation of two distinct races: The Eternals and The Deviants. Often defending Earth from their monstrous counterparts, the Eternals became embroiled in a civil war over whether or not they should conquer the other races. One faction was led by Kronos and the other by his war-loving brother named Uranos, with Kronos’ side ultimately winning the conflict while Uranos and his followers were exiled.
