UPDATE: In response to this earlier story, io9 contacted Lucasfilm and confirmed that the quote wasn’t translated correctly, with a rep saying: “[Kennedy] said it’s something she’d like to do one day in the future.”
The original story follows:
Well… Hollywood is known for its out-of-the-box ideas right? When it was announced that Han Solo would be getting his own Star Wars spin-off film, people responded with more of a mixed mentality. Some excited about the thought of fleshing out the character while others were not too keen on seeing their favourite outlaw outside of the main series.
With the film finally premiering, not everybody is sold on Solo: A Star Wars Story. However, what everyone seems to be sold on is Donald Glover’s portrayal of Lando Calrissian. It seems that “everybody” in this case also includes Lucasfilm and Disney. Studio chief Kathleen Kennedy recently conducted in interview with Premiere France where she stated that Donald Glover’s Lando will in fact join the Star Wars anthology series as he will be getting his own spin-off film.
“We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian. Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca, but Lando will be next.”
Based on the context of the quote, it sounds like this Lando spin-off will be “next” in the sense that it will be the chapter that follows Solo, not that it necessarily will be the next Star Wars movie to go into production or even the next Star Wars Story anthology feature to come out. Lucasfilm is already gearing up production on their Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off film as well as production on Star Wars: Episode IX.
We also know that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is working on a new trilogy and the pair behind Game of Thrones is also working on a series of future films. We can now add a Lando movie to the list of things we expect to see, with no idea when we actually expect to see them.
Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theatres on May 25, 2018
