‘Star Wars’: Obi-Wan Kenobi Standalone Film Reportedly Has a Director & Synopsis

First things first, this report is coming from TMZ of all places so take it with a MASSIVE grain of salt. However, if this story turns out to be true, Star Wars fans everywhere will become more excited than ever.

It seems like Lucasfilm is finally gearing up to begin production on its yet-to-be officially confirmed anthology film centred on Obi-Wan Kenobi, which apparently will be titled Obi-Wan: A Star Wars Story. The famous Jedi appeared in both the original trilogy as old Ben Kenobi and in the prequel trilogy as the young Jedi tasked with training Anakin Skywalker. Now, a new report tells us that his standalone film will be set in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, like the previous two Star Wars anthology films as well as what the plot may entail for the broken Jedi.

This is word for word what appeared on TMZ… which is why I was initially hesitant to write this:

The synopsis reads as follows … Obi-Wan is on Tatooine being an elusive hermit and stuff, but secretly watches over an infant Luke Skywalker, whom he delivered to his uncle, Owen. Tensions between the local farmers and a tribe of Sand People — headed by a ruthless war chief — eventually brings Obi outta hiding … and into Jedi kickass mode. Scene.

I got to believe that they paraphrased but regardless, on with the rest of the story.

The newly released production bulletin also confirms that Stephen Daldry (The Hours) will direct the film after previously being rumored to be in talks with Lucasfilm and Disney. The movie’s shooting in London at Pinewood Studios, recently used for ‘The Last Jedi.’ Production is set to begin next spring.

The report ends by saying that, while Ewan McGregor has made it clear that he is ready to reprise the role, Lucasfilm has not contacted him yet about playing Obi-Wan in this film. Personally, Ewan McGregor was arguably the best part of the prequel trilogy and it would be a mistake if Lucasfilm did not bring him back for this feature.
