Roseanne Revival Canceled Over Star’s Racist Tweets

The ABC produced reboot of the popular sitcom, Roseanne, has been canceled by the network after airing its first season since the show’s original cancellation. This all follows the online outrage caused by an offensive tweet that originated from the series lead actress, Roseanne Barr.

The tweet that caused the outrage was about former Obama White House Adviser Valarie Jarrett.  Barr had falsely accused Jarrett of having connections to the Muslim Brotherhood.  She wrote on her Twitter account: “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj,”  This was done as a reply to another post that claimed Jarrett, during her time in the White House, covered up alleged ‘misdeeds’ perpetrated by the Obama Administration.

ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey made a statement about Barr’s tweet and the shows status: “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”

Barr’s post had been condemned by people involved in the production of Roseanne, such as writer Wanda Sykes and co-star Sara Gilbert.  Sykes announced she would not return for the proposed eleventh season of the series when the chance of renewal was still plausible.  Gilbert wrote on her Twitter account: “Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least.”

Barr has since apologized for the offensive statement and has stated her intent to leave Twitter.
