DC Comics has announced that they are relaunching their Vertigo imprint, with the line-wide changes starting in September. Under the direction of editor Mark Boyle, the imprint will release four titles before 2018 is over, with three more series arriving in early 2019. In regards to the relaunch Boyle had this to say:
“We’re returning to our roots by spotlighting the most exciting new voices in comics, as well as bringing new voices to comics. From the corners of television, games, music, activism, podcasting, comics and more, all of our creators are passionate and have something to say. These sophisticated stories have amazing new characters and vast worlds to explore. That’s what it has always been about for me — new stories, new voices, new possibilities. We’re creating a new generation of DC Vertigo classics for readers of all genres.”
This is good news for Vertigo as the imprint was once known for featuring experimental comics and exploring genres outside of the Superhero norm. These included critically lauded series such as Sandman, Transmetropolitan, Scalped, The Invisibles and so much more. The imprint brought new voices to the American comics industry and the comics medium in general. As of late the imprint hasn’t quite lived up to it’s past success, with some even questioning the imprints continued existence. Hopefully these new socially relevant and sophisticated stories bring the imprint back to its glory days.
