Box Office Report: ‘Incredibles 2’ Flying to Record $170M-Plus Debut

It only took 14 years but finally, Incredibles 2 premieres in theatres worldwide tonight it looks like it will be yet another resounding success for Disney and Pixar.

Incredibles 2 is flying to a record-shattering $170 million domestic launch from 4,410 theaters, by far the biggest box-office debut in history for an animated film, according to early Friday returns. The current title holder is fellow Pixar title Finding Dory, which earned $135 million, not adjusted for inflation.

Currently, Incredibles 2 is projected to earn as much as $68 million-$69 million on Friday, including a record $18.5 million in Thursday previews. The film is outpacing Beauty and the Beast ($16.3 million), Spider-Man: Homecoming ($15.4 million), and Thor: Ragnarok ($14.5 million) while almost matching Deadpool 2 ($18.6 million).

Being the first studio animated film of the 2018 summer season, the Brad Bird-directed sequel will easily score the third best opening of 2018 so far, behind Avengers: Infinity War, which opened to a record $257.7 million, and Black Panther, which debuted to $202 million, both of which are from Disney/Marvel.

Incredibles 2 is directed by Brad Bird, who also wrote and helmed the first film. Along with Bird, Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell, Samuel L. Jackson and John Ratzenberger reprise their roles. New additions to the voice cast include Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Sophia Bush and Isabella Rossellini.

In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose superpowers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.
