Box Office Report: ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ Crosses $1 Billion; ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’ Nabs $11.5M on Thursday

JA Bayona’s monster epic has officially become the third film of 2018 to cross the $1 billion mark as its global total now sits at $1.066 billion.

The fifth film in the Jurassic franchise is the 35th movie to reach that milestone. Fallen Kingdom joins its predecessor, 2015’s Jurassic World, which ended its theatrical run with $1.7 billion. In North America, Fallen Kingdom has raked in $304.8 million and $700.7 million from international territories. Universal, the studio behind the film, now has released seven billion-dollar grossing movies.

Elsewhere, Ant-Man and the Wasp got off to a flying start last night, with Thursday previews. The 20th Walt Disney/Marvel Cinematic Universe feature in just over ten years earned a solid $11.5m in advance-night previews. That’s in line with what used to be the norm for an MCU preview gross during Phase Two and early Phase Three, right around (sans inflation) Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($10.2m in 2014), Guardians of the Galaxy ($11.2m in 2014) and Doctor Strange ($9.4m in 2016).

As the MCU got more popular, and Thursday preview showings became more of a general audience activity, the numbers went up, as did the Thursday-to-weekend frontloading.

The summer season has hit $2.4 billion as of July 4, up 15.6% over last year, and the year-to-date total has surged 8.9% ahead of 2017, with $6.35 billion.

Both films are in theatres everywhere now.
