Jason Bourne Prequel ‘Treadstone’ Lands Series at USA Network

After originally ordered to pilot back in April, the drama Treadstone has been ordered straight to series by USA Network.

Treadstone is being produced by Universal Cable Productions and is being written and executively produced by Tim Kring, who also wrote episodes for the television show Heroes. The pilot will be directed by Ramin Bahrani, who has directed films like 99 Homes and the recent HBO rendition of Fahrenheit 451.

The series is said to center on the origin story of the fictional CIA black ops program that created Jason Bourne, Operation Treadstone- a program which uses behavior-modification to break down assassins and make them effective and unstoppable living weapons. The first season will follow sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions. The series is expected to go into production in 2019.

After the release of Jason Bourne (2016), the latest film in the Bourne franchise, this may be the right path to take. Matt Damon has always done well as Jason Bourne and the movies themselves have done well at the box office, but it makes sense to take the franchise in a different direction. One of the most interesting things about the franchise is the fact that other agents like Bourne exist. After six movies, audiences are well aware of who and what Jason Bourne is like. A television series would create the chance for new agents to become introduced and would give the franchise more attempts at creating emotion rather than just strictly focus on action. With experience on a successful television show full of action like Heroes, it will be interesting to see how Kring’s take on the Bourne universe.
