Matt Smith Joins ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ In Key Role

From saving the world in Doctor Who to being the Queen’s consort in The Crown, Matt Smith has found his next big gig as he has just joined Star Wars: Episode IX in a key role.

The casting comes from Variety who say that insiders told them about Smith joining production which is underway in the United Kingdom.

Smith joins returning cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver, as well as newcomers Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie. Billy Dee Williams is reprising his role as Lando Calrissian, and Carrie Fisher will be featured as Leia Organa in the final installment of the Skywalker saga, using previously unreleased footage shot from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

Mark Hamill will be returning as Luke Skywalker, Joonas Suotamo will be back as Chewbacca and Anthony Daniels will reprise his role as C-3PO.

JJ Abrams helmed Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and returned to direct this latest installment after Colin Trevorrow exited following creative differences. Rian Johnson came aboard to direct The Last Jedi, the second installment in the sequel trilogy which recieved an incredible amount of acclaim and controversy. Abrams filled the role of director for the final installment last fall and has spent most of that time working on the script with Chris Terrio. Kathleen Kennedy is producing the pic.
