Box Office Report: ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ Tops Thanksgiving Box Office with $84.5M

American Thanksgiving has arrived and the holiday box office is in full swing as Ralph Breaks the Internet topped the Wednesday-Sunday chart with a sizeable $84.5 million from 4,017 theaters, the second-best showing of all time for the five-day corridor behind fellow Disney Animation Studios’ blockbuster Frozen ($93.6 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Creed II (review out soon) secured a knockout victory with a solid five-day total of $55.8 million from 3,441 locations, the top Thanksgiving start of all time for a live-action film. The second sequel in the revived Rocky franchise was fueled by a diverse audience as well as Michael B. Jordan’s star power.

Total ticket sales for the Wednesday-Sunday Thanksgiving season crossed $300 million, passing the record set in 2013 with $295 million, according to Comscore. At this rate, 2018 domestic box-office revenue is expected to secure a new record.

Unfortunately, not every film had the same luck at the dinner table…

Lionsgate’s big-budget Robin Hood bombed, grossing $14.2 million from 2,857 theaters against a $100 million budget and was torn apart by critics. On the awards front, The Front Runner likewise bombed, while Green Book struggled badly.

Finally, at the specialty box office, Fox Searchlight’s The Favourite debuted on Friday in four theaters in New York York and Los Angeles. The period royal drama posted a location average of $105,000.
