Nia DaCosta Tapped to Direct Jordan Peele-Produced ‘Candyman’ Reboot

Director and writer Nia DaCosta has been chosen to lead Candyman, a new remake of the classic horror film with Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and MGM producing.

The film is said to be serving as a “spiritual sequel” to the original and will return to the same section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood. Production is expected to begin next spring with an expected theatrical release on June 12, 2020.

When asked about the project, Peele said “‘Candyman’ was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the ‘Candyman’ canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”

Peele wrote and directed Get Out which earned $250 million worldwide and earned four Oscar nominations including Best Actor, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay which Peele ended up winning. Most recently, MGM has found great success with Creed II, which earned the best five-day Thanksgiving opening for a live-action feature with an astounding $56M.

DaCosta’s latest film is the crime drama Little Woods starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James. The film made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and earned her the Nora Ephron Award.
