Latino Superhero Movie ‘Blue Beetle’ in Development at DC

DC and Warner Bros. are in the process of developing their first Latino superhero film about Jaime Reyes, known as the Blue Beetle, according to a report by TheWrap.

Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, a Mexican-born writer who wrote the Scarface remake as well as the upcoming Miss Bala remake, has been tapped to write the script.

After Dan Garret and Ted Kord, Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes is the third person to take on the Blue Beetle in the comics. Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, the character first appeared in the 5th issue of Infinite Crisis in 2006. Two months later, his own monthly series began with Blue Beetle #1.

In the comics, Jaime Reyes discovers the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school. Reyes takes the scarab home, only to find that the scarab has come alive and sealed itself to the base of Jaime’s spine. The scarab creates a suit of extraterrestrial armor which can be modified to enhance Jaime’s speed and strength. The suit can also create weapons and wings.

While other Latino characters exist in DC’s universe, such as El Diablo in Suicide Squad and Renee Montoya in Birds of Prey, this will be the first stand-alone title to feature a Latino lead.
