Chris Messina has officially joined DC’s upcoming Birds of Prey film in the role of Victor Zsasz, the notoriously twisted serial killer who’s known for slitting his victims’ throats and leaving them in lifelike poses while adding a tally mark to himself after each kill. Zsasz will be joining Black Mask, who’s being played by Ewan McGregor.
The character first appeared in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1 (June 1992). He is a sadistic serial killer who carves a tally mark onto himself for each of his victims. At 25, his parents die in a boating accident and this sends him into a deep depression, losing himself in gambling, and ultimately everything to the Penguin. He tries to commit suicide, but after killing a homeless man, he becomes addicted to the thrill and is known for slitting his victims’ throats and leaving them in lifelike poses
Messina will join Margot Robbie who is reprising her role as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead who’s playing Huntress, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell who’s playing Black Canary. Cathy Yun is set to direct and Christina Hodson is penning the script. Sue Kroll is producing along with Margot Robbie and Bryan Unkeless.
In addition today, Warner Bros. laid out the rest of those cast in Birds of Prey, keeping their roles a secret including Steven Williams (The Chi), Derek Wilson (Future Man, Preacher), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse, The Tick), and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs).
The DC movie is set to open on Feb. 7, 2020.
