James Gunn Officially In Talks to Direct WB’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

A few months ago, Talkies Network reported that James Gunn had been brought in by WB to write the sequel to Suicide Squad. The project was originally in the hands of Gavin O’Connor but that fell through. Now, we have official confirmation that Gunn is also attached to direct the film.

THR is reporting that, not only will Gunn direct the film, it isn’t even being considered a sequel anymore but instead, a relaunch. Warner Bros. has dated the film for an Aug. 2021 release, coinciding with the release of Matt Reeves’ Batman film in June 2021.

The film has been given the new title of The Suicide Squad, keeping in line with the relaunch aspect . The 2016 movie, directed by David Ayer, featured characters Deadshot, Harley Quinn, The Joker, Captain Boomerang and Amanda Waller, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences.

Insiders note that Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with mostly an all-new cast of characters and actors. Given this information, it is unclear if the film will remain apart of the current DCEU or operate outside of it. Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.

Charles Roven and Peter Safran will produce the feature. Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder are acting as executive producers.
