FX Announces ‘Legion’ Will End with Season 3

The tales of Charles Xavier’s son will come to and end.

FX announced today at the TCA Winter 2019 Press Tour that the hit series Legion, will come to an end after season 3. FX president John Landgraf made clear that the show was not being “canceled,” but rather, creator Noah Hawley always planned for a three-season series.

Legion, which is set parallel to the current X-Men franchise, centers on David Haller (Dan Stevens), whose history of psychiatric issues lead to his discovery that he has mutant powers. The show’s second season reveals that he is actually both psychic and schizophrenic.

The cast also includes Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, Amber Midthunder, Jeremie Harris, Jean Smart, Jemaine Clement, Katie Aselton, Navid Negahban and Hamish Linklater.

The third season sees a shift in the status quo. David’s actions at the end of the show’s second season have led him to become more like the dangerous and unstable Legion from the Marvel Comics universe. Rachel Kellar’s Syd Barrett will become the hero of the show’s third season.

The second season of Legion suffered sizable ratings declines, with same-day viewership falling by more than half to 430,000. A week of delayed viewing brought the series up to about 1 million viewers, but that’s still about half of the seven-day number for the first season.

The announcement of Legion ending comes on the heels of FX picking up another comic-based series: The cabler’s adaptation of Y: The Last Man is set to debut in 2020.
