The sword fighting cat is finally coming back to the big screen.
Deadline is reporting that the long-awaited sequel to 2011’s Puss in Boots is officially in the works at DreamWorks Animation. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse co-director Bob Persichetti has signed on to helm the feature, currently going by Puss in Boots 2.
Persichetti, a veteran of animation for more than 20 years, has worked with DreamWorks Animation on numerous occasions. He served as the Head of Story and voiced a role in the original Puss in Boots.
Latifa Ouaou, who acted as a producer on Puss in Boots, will oversee development of the sequel on behalf of Illumination and Chris Meledandri, working closely with the DWA leadership team. The news comes after DWA signed a new film deal with Universal Pictures. The first film under the new pact, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, was released to critical and commercial acclaim.
The first Puss in Boots received an Oscar nomination in 2012 for Best Animated Feature and grossed more than $550 million globally. . The original starred the voiceover cast of Antonio Banderas (Puss), Salma Hayek (Kitty Softpaws), Zach Galifianakis (Humpty Alexander Dumpty), Billy Bob Thorton (Jack), Amy Sedaris (Jill) and Constance Marie (Imelda).
The news also follows the announcement that Chris Meledandri had been tasked to revive both the Shrek and Puss in Boots film series, with the original cast potentially returning. There has been no word lately on the development of Shrek 5.
