Netflix Responds to Steven Spielberg’s Attempt To Block Streaming Giant From Oscars

While it may be indirect, Netflix has finally responded to Steven Spielberg’s crusade against blocking the streamer from competing at the Oscars.

The streaming giant didn’t name Spielberg directly in its tweet, but considering his views on Netflix films and the Academy Awards, it seems like the statement is associated with the Ready Player One director:

Spielberg, the current governor of the Academy’s directors branch, plans to argue for films that debut on streaming services or get a short theatrical run should qualify for the Emmys instead of the Oscars.

His stance revolves more around preserving the cinematic experience of going to a theatre rather than block Netflix entirely. He believes that Netflix does not play by the same rules as other major studios but this is the very reason why Netflix is praised.

They take the risks other major studios won’t, which is why films like Roma get made. The film industry has seemingly forgotten about the mid-budget feature but Netflix prides itself on smaller, more meaningful films (even if some miss their mark.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out at the next Academy meeting.
