Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ Adaptation Starts Filming; Hans Zimmer to Compose the Score

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment have confirmed that production on the upcoming Dune reboot has officially begun. Denis Villeneuve is set to helm the project, co-writing the script with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts.

WB also confirmed that Blade Runner 2049 co-composer Hans Zimmer will reunite with Villeneuve to compose the score (as if this film couldn’t get any more exciting).

The film’s cast includes Timothee Chalamet, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Stephen Henderson, Charlotte Rampling, and Jason Momoa.

The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Joe Caracciolo, and Villeneuve. The executive producers are Tanya Lapointe, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Kim Herbert, Thomas Tull, Jon Spaihts, Richard P. Rubinstein, John Harrison, and Herbert W. Gains, with Kevin J. Anderson serving as creative consultant.

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

On cinematography, Villeneuve has tapped Greig Fraser (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story); three-time Oscar-nominated costume designers Jacqueline West (The Revenant) and Bob Morgan; as well as stunt coordinator Tom Struthers (The Dark Knight trilogy).

Villeneuve is also reteaming with two-time Oscar-nominated production designer Patrice Vermette (Arrival), two-time Oscar-nominated editor Joe Walker (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival), two-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert (First Man, Blade Runner 2049), and Oscar-winning special effects supervisor Gerd Nefzer (Blade Runner 2049).

Dune is filming on location in Budapest, Hungary, and in Jordan and is currently scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, 2020.
