James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ Sequels Adds Jemaine Clement

Jemaine Clement is heading to the world of Pandora.

Today, director James Cameron announced the Flight of the Concords and Moana star has joined all four Avatar sequels.

“I’ve loved Jemaine’s work for years and I’m really pumped that he’s joining our cast as Ian Garvin, one of my favorite characters,” Cameron said in a statement.

Clement has had featured parts in films such as Men in Black 3 and Humor Me and has done voice-work for Despicable Me, Rio, Moana and The Lego Batman Movie. He currently portrays Oliver Bird on the FX series Legion.

Avatar 2, the first of four anticipated sequels, and tentatively titled The Way of the Water, will hit theaters on Dec. 17, 2021, a year after what Fox had planned before it was bought by Disney in March. The house of mouse confirmed that it would alternate Avatar and Star Wars films, with Avatar 3 arriving in 2023, Avatar 4 in 2025, and finally Avatar 5 in 2027.

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver are returning for the upcoming films. Michelle Yeoh, Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Vin Deisel, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, and David Thewlis, have also joined the cast.

Cameron and Jon Landau are producing through their Lightstorm Entertainment company. The script was written by Cameron with Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Shane Salerno.

The original 2009 epic still remains as the highest grossing film in box office history at a staggering $2.7 billion. The original plan was for Cameron to pen and direct two sequels, but realized that the mythos he created would be too much, leading to another two sequels to be commissioned.
