Report: ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ Movie in the Works with Writer Laeta Kalogridis

It appears ladies and gentleman, that your prayers have been answered.

A new report from Buzzfeed has announced that Lucasfilm is finally developing a film adaptation of the beloved video game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Laeta Kalogridis (AvatarShutter Island) is penning the script, which is said to have potential to spawn an entire trilogy.

Knights of the Old Republic, nicknamed KOTOR by its legion of fans, is a role-playing game chronicling the Jedi versus the Sith, set nearly 4,000 years before the events of 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope. The film has been hailed for its terrific world building, something fans have longed to see translated to the big screen.

This year’s Star Wars Celebration saw Kathleen Kennedy seemingly confirm that the studio was developing something around the franchise, saying:

“Yes, we are developing something to look at,” after being asked about KOTOR. “Right now, I have no idea where things might fall.”

According to Buzzfeed’s insiders, Kalogridis is finishing the first script, which could lead to a trilogy. Kalogridis’ work with the studio marks the first time since 1980’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back that a female worked on a major Star Wars film (Leigh Brackett received a cowriting credit with Lawrence Kasdan).

December will see the Skywalker saga of the Star Wars universe see its conclusion with The Rise of Skywalker. Following this, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss will write and direct a trilogy of films, the first of which will debut in 2022. Additionally, the studio will shift focus to the television side, with three series’ currently in development for Disney+.

As said, the story of Knights of the Old Republic takes place almost 4000 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire, where Darth Malak, a Dark Lord of the Sith, has unleashed a Sith armada against the Republic. The player , as a Jedi, must venture to different planets in the galaxy in order to defeat Malak.
