Barry Jenkins to Direct Alvin Ailey Biopic for Fox Searchlight

Barry Jenkins has been confirmed to be directing the upcoming Fox Searchlight film based on the life of choreographer Alvin Ailey.

Early last year, Searchlight made a deal with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the organization that controls the rights to Ailey’s choreography, which lead to full cooperation as well as the rights to Jennifer Dunning’s biography Alvin Ailey: A Life In Dance.

Fox Searchlight and the producers are said to be working closely with artistic directors Robert Battle and Judith Jamison to bring accuracy and authenticity to Ailey’s story and choreography. Julian Breece is penning the script for the film, and Judy Kinberg, Adele Romanski, Rachel Cohen, and Alicia Keys are serving as producers.

In 2016, Barry Jenkins won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film Moonlight, as well as Best Picture, and a Best Director nomination. Most recently, he was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for If Beale Street Could Talk, which he also directed. He most recently wrote the script for Twelve, a film adaptation of the documentary 12 O’Clock Boys.
