‘Transparent’ Creator Jill Soloway Replaces Bryan Singer as Writer/Director of ‘Red Sonja’

Red Sonja is coming and it has finally announced a new writer and director.

THR has confirmed that Transparent creator Jill Soloway will both write and direct Red Sonja, based on the comic book of the same name. Red Sonja was originally to be directed by Bryan Singer, but Millennium Films put the film on hold in February after The Atlantic published a bombshell article in which multiple new accusers claimed Singer raped them when they were underage.

Following the reveal,  Millennium Films CEO Avi Lerner released a controversial statement in which he called the Atlantic article “agenda driven fake news” and said the plan was to to let Singer keep his job.  After the statement was widely criticized, Lerner backtracked, saying that crisis PR guru Howard Bragman had written the statement and Lerner said he approved it without reading it.

A Red Sonja movie has been in the works at Millennium for over a decade. With Soloway joining the project so soon after the Singer-controversy, it shows the company still very much wants to develop this project.

Soloway has won two directing Emmys for work on Amazon’s Transparent, which is officially ending this year with a musical finale
