Scarlett Johansson Remains Tight-Lipped on if Jeremy Renner will be in ‘Black Widow’

Ever since she debuted in Iron Man 2 back in 2010, fans everywhere have been clamoring for a solo Black Widow film. After countless rumors, the wish became a reality, as Marvel is set to release Black Widow in 2020, with Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff. She will be joined by David Harbour as Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, O. T. Fagbenle as Rick Mason, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. One name though that has been rumored to appear but hasn’t been confirmed is Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye.

The Black Widow/Hawkeye relationship within the MCU has been one of the strongest dynamics in the franchise. It was almost a given that he would be confirmed as a member of the cast but then story details were dropped at San Diego Comic Con.

The film will take place between the events of Civil War and Infinity War, a time where Clint Barton is under house arrest. That being said, the film will feature the much-talked-about mission to Budapest, a task that featured both Black Widow and Hawkeye. So, does this mean Renner will be in the film? Johansson remains tight-lipped about the question.

Speaking to Good Morning America, Johansson joked about what Disney would do to her if she answered the question of Renner appearing in Black Widow:

“That’s when you see the tranq gun come out, “ Johansson jokes. “My lips are sealed. You got to wait and see.”

Before that, Johansson was asked about what it means to have a solo film, and she admitted that going solo presents a new kind of challenge for her as an actor.

“You know it’s a little bit scary not having the kind of cushion of my fellow Avengers around,” Johansson says. “I mean, I hate to keep using the word ‘vulnerable,’ but you kind of feel like you’ve put yourself out there in a different way because the character stands on her own.”

While Renner may or may not appear in Black Widow, the character of Clint Barton will continue on within the MCU. Renner be headlining the upcoming Hawkeye Disney+ series, which will introduce Clint Barton’s protege Kate Bishop.

Black Widow opens in theaters on May 1, 2020.
