Amazon Teams with Viola Davis for ‘Fast Color’ Series

The story of three generations of black women with superpowers is being turned into a TV series at Amazon.

Deadline is reporting that Amazon has partnered with Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions to develop a TV series based on the 2019 film, Fast Color. The critically acclaimed film was unable to generate enough interest to warrant a box office profit. Lack of marketing (among other things such as Hollywood politics) played a role in the film faltering at the box office.

The series will also bring back the film’s writers Julia Hart and Jordan Horowitz and their Original Headquarters Company as well as Mickey Liddell’s LD Entertainment. Hart will direct the pilot, having already helmed the feature film.

“Since the day we premiered at SXSW, there has been an incredible outpouring of grassroots support for this film. We couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to continue living in this world, with these women, and can’t imagine better partners than Viola and Julius and Mickey and Pete and everyone at Amazon,” said Hart.

The original film saw Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), her mom Bo (Lorraine Toussaint) and Ruth’s daughter Lila (Saniyya Sidney) discover the scope of each of their powers, while Ruth is on the run from people who wish to study her abilities.

Similar to the film, the synopsis for the series will follow the same story:

“The television series will follow Ruth, a former drug addict and runaway, who returns home and rediscovers the special powers she thought she lost, powers that her family have long kept hidden from the public. Three generations of black women reconnect and as they learn more about themselves and the generations who came before, they begin to realize that one of them could save the world.”

This project comes from Davis and Tennon’s first-look deal at Amazon, where they are also developing Wild Seed, based on the work of Octavia Butler.

“Our commitment at JuVee as artists is what fuels our imagination. We want to play. We want to challenge. We want to ask, ‘What if…..’ Fast Color allows us to live in a world that fulfills all of the above. It’s a story and world that reminds us that not only do we have a soul, but we have extraordinary, unlikely women who fiercely protect it,” said Davis and Tennon.

Fast Color is now available on DVD/Blu-Ray and digital download.
