James Wan Will Direct a New Horror Film Before Returning for ‘Aquaman 2’

James Wan has lined up his next project, and it’s a return to his roots.

Wan is set to helm a new, original horror film for New Line Cinema. The film, which Wan is co-writing with Ingrid Bisu— will shoot in Los Angeles, as a recipient of the Independent California Film Rebate.

While plot details are currently being kept underwraps, insiders noted that Wan is looking to do something with horror that he hasn’t done before. Normally, he takes a supernatural/psychological approach to the genre. Could Wan be looking to do something more gritty and realistic?

The Aquaman director will return to the world of DC Comics once he completes this film. Wan is producing Aquaman 2 and is expected to return to the director’s chair. He will also be producing the Aquaman spin-off film The Trench. The original Aquaman grossed over $1 billion, becoming the hightest grossing DC film in history.

Wan and Michael Clear will produce through their Atomic Monster banner. Starlight Media and Midas Innovation will independently finance the movie and will retain distribution rights in China.
