After only two seasons, the Syfy series Krypton is coming to an end. The network has opted to not renew the Superman origin drama series. In addition to this series, the network also decided to not proceed with the previously announced Lobo spinoff that they were attempting to develop.
According to Deadline, Krypton producer Warner Horizon Scripted Television is in talks with other outlets in an attempt to continue the franchise elsewhere. DC Universe and the upcoming HBO Max service are considered the most likely options.
When the show launched its first season in March of 2018, Krypton was a hit. It earned the network’s most-watched debut season among total viewers for an original series and the most-watched season for any scripted series on the network.
But once season two was released, Krypton’s ratings took a huge hit. The show began to lose all the traction that it had gained in its first season, with its second season 408,000 same-day viewers. This is a drastic decrease from the 1.8 million viewers that season one averaged.
Krypton was set two generations before the destruction of Superman’s home planet, Krypton. The series followed Seg-El, Superman’s grandfather, as a young man who is forced to make a heavy decision: save his home planet or let it be destroyed in order to save the fate of his future grandson. The series starred Cameron Cuffe, Georgina Campbell, Shaun Sipos, Colin Salmon, Ann Ogbomo, Aaron Pierre, Rasmus Hardiker, Wallis Day, Blake Ritson and Ian McElhinney.
Lobo made an appearance in the second season of Krypton and was played by Emmett J. Scanlan. A deal was made for Scanlan to star in the Lobo series with Krypton executive producer Cameron Welsh set to executive producer and write the show.
The first season of Krypton is currently streaming on DC Universe, with season 2 arriving to the platform in 2020.
