Disney D23 Expo 2019: Disney+ Presentation Live Coverage

Today marks the official kick off for Disney’s fan convention, the D23 Expo! Fans everywhere have flocked to Anaheim California to be in the front row for Disney’s showcase of its many franchises and platforms.

One platform that will get the spotlight this weekend is the highly anticipated streaming service, Disney+, set to launch in Canada on November 12, 2019. As day 1 of the expo rolls on, the Disney+ presentation will soon take centre stage, and Talkies Network is here with a live blog to keep you updated on all the news rolling out from the panel!

Wasting no time at all, Disney announces that Hilary Duff will be back as Lizzie McGuire in a sequel series set to premiere on Disney+!

The reimagined version of the sitcom, a sequel to the 2001 Disney Channel series, Lizzie McGuire is  a 30-year-old millennial navigating life in New York City. The animated version of Lizzie will be back as well.

And now the official presentation has begun. Out on stage is the cast for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (I still can’t believe that’s the actual title).

Yvette Nicole Brown is hosting today’s Disney+ panel. She plays Aunt Sarah in Disney’s live-action remake of Lady and The Tramp. The film premieres on Disney+ on November 12.

Chairman Kevin Mayer takes the stage. He begins discussing the overall Disney+ platform, and then announces that the service will house every Pixar film upon launching in November. Disney+ will also be the home to every single Disney animated classic at launch.

Head of the Disney Channel, Gary Marsh is brought on stage to discuss the projects they have in development for Disney+.

As the panel goes on, Disney+ has unveiled a brand new trailer for the service, which you can check out below.

Marsh confirmed that Disney+ will have over 5,000 episodes of Disney Channel shows and over 100 Disney Channel Original Movies at launch.

Hilary Duff takes the stage and announces she’s starring as an “older, wiser” Lizzie in the Lizzie McGuire sequel series!

The focus shifts back to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The story revolves around students attending East High where the movies were filmed and get cast in the stage version of High School Musical. The series will feature new songs.

Pixar is next up on the dock and they’re showcasing Forky Asks a Question. The series will be the first of two Toy Story 4 spin-off shorts. Forky, who was “just created” by Bonnie, and so has a lot of questions, ranging from the existential — “What is love?” — to the mundane and comical — “What is cheese?”

Tony Hale takes the stage and introduces a clip on the screen. Forky is seen talking to Hamm. Both Hale and John Ratzenberger are reprising their roles. In the clip, Ham explains the concept of money to Forky.

Next up is the Monsters Inc. sequel series, Monsters At Work! The upcoming animated show is set to debut in 2020 on the platform.

The series picks up six months after the original film with the power plant now harvesting the laughter of children to fuel the city of Monstropolis. It will follow Tylor Tuskmon (Ben Feldman) an eager and talented mechanic on the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team who dreams of working on the Laugh Floor alongside Mike and Sulley. The original Monsters Inc. cast will return for the show. Aisha Tyler was announced to be playing the mother of Tyler Tuskmon.


Feige kicks things off by saying he has already signed up for Disney+ using his own money. He jokes that he didn’t receive any employee discount.

Feige announces that Avengers: Endgame will debut on Disney+ on December 11th. Everyone present at the Disney+ panel will get a We Love You 3000 pin. Check out an image of the pin, courtesy of DiscussingFilm.

Marvel’s What If…? is the first series to be showcased. As said before, almost the entire cast of the MCU will be bac reprising their roles.

The first episode is set in a world where Peggy Carter got the Super Soldier Serum, and scrawny Steve Rogers joined the fight in a suit of armor created by Howard Stark.

A clip from the animated series is being shown to fans!

Feige confirms that the series will have one episode for each of the 23 Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Tying back to the comment on the first episode, Peggy Carter has been announced to be playing Captain Britain! The clip also showed a zombified Captain America vs. The Winter Solider.

LOKI IS UP NEXT. Tom Hiddleston unfortunately is not present at the showcase. In a call back to Infinity War, the question of “will the sun shine on Loki again?” is asked. Also asked is will he make a friend? Where did he go after the Tesseract? All will be answered when LOKI premieres on Disney+.

It’s time for FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER! Series creator Malcolm Spellman, and, stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan take the stage.

AND THE BRING OUT EMILY VANCAMP! Sharon Carter is back for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier!

As expected, US AGENT will be the main antagonist for the series, and Overlord star Wyatt Russell has been chosen for the role! He’s brought on stage sporting a terrific beard.

50s music beings playing, and out comes the cast for WandaVision! The series is described as half classic sifcom and half epic MCU adventure.

Randall Park has been announced to be reprising his role as Jimmy Woo Anti-Man and The Wasp! Kat Dennings, who plays Darcy in the THOR movies will also reprise her role in WandaVision.

Also joining the cast is Kathryn Hahn, who will be playing Wanda and Vision’s nosey neighbour!


Feige confirms that Ms. Marvel will first debut on the Disney+ before moving to the movie universe.




AND THE BIGGEST NEWS, A SHE-HULK SERIES! Feige confirms that Bruce Banner will no longer be the only Hulk in the MCU!


After a sizzle reel plays for Disney+ non-fiction series’, Jeff Goldblum takes the stage for THE WORLD ACCORDING TO JEFF GOLDBLUM. The series will be 12 episodes long.

Next up is the Kristen Bell-produced series, ENCORE!

Disney’s Sean Bailey takes the stage to discuss live-action original projects hitting Disney+.

First to be showcased is Stargirl. The film centers on a homeschooled teenage girl who enrolls in an Arizona high school. Her non-conformity alters the ecosystem of the student body and captures the heart of star-struck boy. Julia Hart directs from a script by Kristin Hahn. Grace VanderWaal, Graham Verchere, Maximiliano Hernandez and Giancarlo Esposito star.

Next up is Timmy Failure. The film centers on the 11-year old boy who believes he is the best detective in town. He runs the detective agency, Total Failure Inc. with his partner, a 1,200-pound (and imaginary) polar bear. Spotlight filmmaker Tom McCarthy is directing the project, with Ophelia Lovibond, Chloe Coleman and Craig Robinson starring. Timmy Failure will be released on the streaming service in the first year of Disney+.

Sean brings out the rescue dogs from Lady and The Tramp. The film will be available when the platform launches on November 12. They’re debuting the first trailer from the film!

Next up is TOGO. The action-adventure film stars Willem Dafoe and centers on a famous and dangerous sled-dog relay. Invincible director Ericson Core will helm the project. Tom Flynn wrote the script for Togo, which will hit streaming service sometime in its first year.

Ending the live-action films is NOELLE. Anna Kendrick stars as Santa Claus’ daughter Noelle in the Christmas story with a female twist. Bill Hader also stars, and Did You Hear About the Morgans? filmmaker Marc Lawrence wrote the script and is directing. The film will release on Disney+ soon after the launch of the service.

RUMOR CONFIRMED! The Muppets Studio has announced MUPPETS NOW for Disney+!


She kicks off the showcase with Star Wars: The Clone Wars! The newest season will debut on Disney+ in February 2020.


Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk join Kennedy on stage to discuss the Rogue One prequel series. They joke that they can’t reveal the title yet. Both described the show as a “spy series.” The prequel will begin filming in London next year.

IT’S MANDALORIAN TIME!!!! Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni take the stage to discuss the first ever live-action Star Wars series.

The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travels of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

Favreau notes that the series will touch on things that Star Wars has never dealt with before. It’s new characters, new people, new areas. He compares the journey to his work on 2008’s Iron Man.

The cast takes the stage! Pedro Pascal, Gina Corano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Taika Waititi.

THE OBI-WAN SERIES IS CONFIRMED. EWAN MCGREGOR IS BACK AND THE SERIES IS COMING TO DISNEY+! All scripts for the series are finished and filming will begin in 2020.
