HE’S BACK!!
In a bombshell announcement, Sony and Disney have officially renewed their Spider-Man partnership, that sees Marvel Studios and Sony co-producing the third MCU Spider-Man film! The new film even has a release date: July 16, 2021.
Kevin Feige will return as lead producer on the film, which also sees Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. As part of the arrangement, Spider-Man will also appear in a future Marvel Studios film. Amy Pascal will also produce through Pascal Pictures, as she has on the first two Holland-led films.
“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” said Feige. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
This past summer saw Disney and Sony’s partnership break down, as the two sides could not come to an agreement on Spider-Man’s future in film. For Disney, they wanted all future Spider-based projects to be financed ona 50/50 basis, with Kevin Feige consulting on them all. Sony however, wanted to keep the terms of the original agreement, which stipulated that Marvel receives about 5% of first-dollar gross and all merchandising revenues.
“Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in Far From Home and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes,” said Amy Pascal. “This has been a winning partnership for the studios, the franchise and the fans and I’m overjoyed it will continue.”
Whatever the case may be, Spider-Man is officially back in the MCU! With news of a Madame Web film being announced yesterday, signs point to Sony and Disney uniting their two Spider-Man universes for a major live-action Spider-Verse.
