‘Aquaman’ Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Lands Lead Role in ‘Matrix 4’

The highly anticipated fourth Matrix film has found its first new cast member.

Variety is reporting that Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has landed one of the lead roles in Matrix 4. The film has Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss returning as Neo and Trinity respectively, with Lana Wachowski directing the feature.

WB greenlit a fourth Matrix film in August, with a script written by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski is producing with Grant Hill. Insiders suggest that the film is eyed to begin production at the top of 2020.

Abdul-Mateen’s role was not confirmed in the original report, but speculation points to him starring as Young Morpheus, who is rumored to appear in the film. Plot details are also unknown as of this writing.

After starring as Black Manta in Aquaman, Abdul-Mateen has starred in Jordan Peele’s Us, and appeared alongside Anthony Mackie in an episode of Black Mirror. He can next be seen in HBO’s Watchmen, was recently tapped to play Black Panther co-founder Bobby Seale in Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 and secured the titular role in the Peele-produced Candyman, set for release in 2020.

Matrix 4 is the first of two Matrix films in development. Avengers writer Zak Penn confirmed on Twitter that he has also been developing a Matrix film, set earlier in the franchise’s timeline. He also confirmed that neither his, nor the fourth main-series film, is a reboot of any kind.
