Netflix Developing Animated Adaptation of Jeff Smith’s ‘Bone’ Comic

One of the most beloved comics in history is finally getting a proper adaptation.

Today, Netflix announced that it has secured the rights to craft an animated adaptation of Jeff Smith’s widely acclaimed comic epic, Bone. The comic was originally set up at Warner for a film adaptation, but plans for that project fell through, leaving the door open for Netflix to come in and scoop up the series.

“I’ve waited a long time for this,” Smith said. “Netflix is the perfect home for Bone. Fans of the books know that the story develops chapter-by-chapter and book-by-book. An animated series is exactly the way to do this! The team at Netflix understands Bone and is committed to doing something special — this is good news for kids and cartoon lovers all over the world.”

The comic follows the Bone cousins — the bold Fone Bone, the scheming Phoney Bone, and the high-strung Smiley Bone — chronicling their adventures through an uncharted desert that gives way to a mysterious valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures.

The black-and-white comic was originally serialized in 55 irregularly released issues from 1991 to 2004. It has gone on to earn 10 Eisner Awards and 11 Harvey Awards. The series was named in Time Magazine’s “10 best graphic novels of all-time,” and IGN placed Bone 60th in the Top 100 comic book heroes.
