The Riddler is officially returning to the big screen!
Paul Dano, best known for his roles in Looper and There Will Be Blood, has officially been cast as Edward Nashton/The Riddler in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The character has historically gone by Edward Nygma, but, as some fans may know, he was initially given the “Nashton” last name when first created.
Robert Pattinson is playing the titular superhero in The Batman, while Zoe Kravitz is playing Catwoman and Jeffrey Wright is on board as Batman ally Commissioner James Gordon.
At one point, Jonah Hill was circling the role of Riddler, in addition to considering playing The Penguin. Talks between Hill and WB broke down, but with the news of Dano joining the film happening so soon after, it’s easy to speculate that Hill was probably leaning towards playing Penguin instead of Riddler.
Dano received a Golden Globe nom for best supporting actor in Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy, and has as also received accolades for roles such as John Tibeats in 12 Years a Slave and Alex Jones in Prisoners.
The Batman opens in theatres on June 25, 2021.
