‘Game Of Thrones’ Creators David Benioff & D.B. Weiss No Longer Developing ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy

David Benioff and D.B Weiss, the duo that brought Game of Thrones to the small screen, are officially no longer helming a Star Wars trilogy.

The late night breaking news, which comes from Deadline, says that the duo has decided to step away from Lucasfilm due to their newly inked overall deal with Netflix. Benioff and Weiss were tapped to usher in a post-Skywalker era of Star Wars, with the first film announced for 2022.

“We love Star Wars,” the pair said in a statement to Deadline. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

While insiders do mention that Benioff/Weiss did lose a bit of luster following the critically disappointing final season of Game of Thrones, their departure is being strictly attributed to their future work with Netflix:

“There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” the GOT pair said. “So we are regretfully stepping away.”

In the grand scheme of things, losing the Benioff/Weiss trilogy will not be a major blow to Lucasfilm’s future Star Wars plans. The company still has Rian Johnson’s series of films in development, as well as a Kevin Feige-produced film. On the TV side, Disney+ will play home to several Star Wars shows, such as The Mandalorin, Cassian Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. didn’t close shut any doors in her send-off statement on Monday:

“David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”
