‘Legion’ Creator Noah Hawley to Write & Direct Next ‘Star Trek’ Film

After much speculation, Paramount has officially given the green light for the next main Star Trek film, and it already has a writer and director.

Noah Hawley, best known as the creator of the FX series’ Fargo and Legion, has been announced as the writer and director for Star Trek 4. The project is expected to see Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana returning to man the U.S.S. Enterprise.

This will serve as the fourth movie in the cinematic series, dubbed the Kelvin timeline, and is separate from the Star Trek film that Quentin Tarantino is developing.

Previously, the studio had given the green light to Star Trek 4 with S.J Clarkson directing. She was set to become the first female to helm a film in the series. Chris Hemosworth, who previously appeared as George Kirk in JJ Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek, was tapped to reprise his role, with the film centering on a father/son relationship between George and James Kirk.

Following a contract breakdown between Paramount and both Hemsworth and Pine, Paramount shelved the film, leaving Clarkson to depart the project. Now, with Hemosworth out of the picture, it would seem that Star Trek 4 has found a new light.

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot will return to produce, with Hawley also producing through his 26 Keys production banner.
