‘Watchmen’ Season 2 Unlikely As Creator Damon Lindelof Closes the Door on Returning

Watchmen took the world by storm upon debuting in late 2019. Acting as both a “remix” on the source material and a sequel series, Damon Lindelof created something special with the HBO series.

Focusing on events surrounding racist violence in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2019, Lindelof managed to balance a slew of new and beautifully crafted characters while still managing to honour the source material and give legacy characters their due.

While many fans have called for Lindelof and HBO to make a second season, it would seem that the door has, for now, been closed on the idea.

Initially, HBO seemed as though there was some shred of hope that Lindelof would return, maintaining that should they pursue more episodes, Lindelof would have to be involved:

“It is really up to Damon at this point, he is thinking about what he wants to do,” HBO president of programming Casey Bloys told Deadline. “Truly, I don’t know at this point whether it is a returning drama series or a limited series. I think one of the things Damon did so brilliantly was, he opened up this entire world. So maybe there is another version with a whole new set of characters. I don’t know because Damon doesn’t know, and I’m taking his lead on this.”

Now however, it seems as though the door has been shut, thanks to comments Lindelof made to USA Today:

Lindelof told USA TODAY this week that he’s told the story he wants to tell and has no interest in a second season, though he’s “given my blessing” to HBO should it want to pursue a new installment with another writer-producer.

Bloys then said that without Damon, it’s highly unlikely that the show would continue:

“It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way.”

Of course, this is television, so its safe to say “never say never.” With Lindelof giving his blessing to HBO to continue the story of Watchmen it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that the company isn’t at least considering a future where the show continues.
