Disney Officially Drops “Fox” Name, Rebrands 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures

In an unsurprising move, Disney has officially wiped itself clean of the “Fox” name, rebranding the studios it purchased in its monumental acquisition of 21st Century’s Fox’s Film and TV assets.

Variety is reporting that the house of mouse has changed 20th Century Fox film studio to 20th Century Studios, while Fox Searchlight Pictures will become simply Searchlight Pictures. The company has also moved forward with changing employee emails to remove the “Fox” name as well.

Searchlight’s next film “Downhill,” with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell, the credits begin with “Searchlight Pictures Presents.” The film will be the first Searchlight release to debut with the new logo. “Call of the Wild,” an upcoming family film, will be released under the 20th Century banner, sans Fox.

Fox Searchlight’s upcoming film Downhill, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell, will be the first of the year to showcase the change. The credits will begin with “Searchlight Pictures Presents.” For 20th Century Fox, the Harrison Ford-led Call of the Wild will open under the 20th Century banner.

Disney is said to be making minimal changes to each logo, meaning the animated opening fans see before each movie (such as the 20th Century fanfare) will not be going anywhere; it’s just the Fox name that is disappearing.

The report notes that no decisions have been made on the TV front, concerning the names of production units 20th Century Fox Television and Fox 21 Television Studios.

The report concludes with a quote from an insider, who laid out exactly why Disney went ahead with this change:

“I think the Fox name means Murdoch, and that is toxic.”
