VINDICATION!!!!! The Snyder Cut of JUSTICE LEAGUE is coming!
After three years of fans call for #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that it will exclusively debut Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of the Warner Bros. Pictures/DC feature film Justice League in 2021.
Snyder held a commentary/watch party of his 2013 film Man of Steel, where he surprised fans with the news during a Q&A with Man of Steel star Henry Cavill.
“I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality,” said Snyder.
The cost of finishing the project is unknown, but insiders peg it to be at around $20 million. Snyder’s cut of Justice League is said to be almost completed, with some of the film’s visuals still needing work. Insiders also said that Snyder will be re-teaming with his Justice League post-production crew, including bringing back many of the actors to record additional dialogue.
What’s also unclear is if the project will still release as a film, or if HBO Max will break it up into a miniseries.
“It will be an entirely new thing, and, especially talking to those who have seen the released movie, a new experience apart from that movie,” Zack Snyder tells The Hollywood Reporter, noting that, to this day, he has not watched the version released in theaters.
When asked about how much of his film made it into the theatrical cut, Snyder said that he estimates it to be around one-fourth of what he did. He said that he always thought he’d finally reveal footage from the film around 20 years down the line, but it grateful that HBO Max is bringing it to their platform.
“Since I got here 14 months ago, the chant to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut has been a daily drumbeat in our offices and inboxes. Well, the fans have asked, and we are thrilled to finally deliver. At the end of the day, it really is all about them and we are beyond excited to be able to release Zack’s ultimate vision for this film in 2021. This could never have happened if it weren’t for the hard work and combined efforts of the teams at HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, Warner Media Entertainment and Direct-To-Consumer.
Even though DC and WB had a huge line-up of DC films, Snyder apparently always had a plan for a five-movie arc (Man of Steel, BvS, Wonder Woman, Justice League Part 1, and Justice League Part 2). These plans were thrown into doubt after the reaction to BvS, but fans knew that after the mess that was Joss Whedon’s Justice League, Snyder’s vision for the DC Universe was being altered.
“Thanks to the efforts of a lot people, we’re excited to bring fans this highly anticipated version of Justice League,” said Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “This feels like the right time to share Zack’s story, and HBO Max is the perfect platform for it. We’re glad the creative planets aligned, allowing us to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.”
The Snyder Cut is coming, and I can’t f****** wait to finally see it.
