It’s still another two days until the latest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe swings into theatres, but reports are coming out projecting how much Spider-Man: Homecoming will make on its opening weekend.
Variety is reporting that Homecoming is looking at an opening weekend box office total of anywhere from $100 million to $120 million. Sony tracked the film at an incredibly conservative $80 million+ but industry insiders believe that its safe to assume that Homecoming will definitely make $100 million+. The film will be opening in 4341 North American locations with around 400 theatres showing the film in IMAX.
Should it break the $100 million mark, the film would become the fifth highest opening for a July movie behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest($135.6M), The Dark Knight ($158.4M), The Dark Knight Rises ($160.9M), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2M).
When compared to other Spider-Man films, Homecoming is projected to do better than The Amazing Spider-Man ($62M), Spider-Man 2 ($88.2M), and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($91.6M) but it likely won’t out-perform Spider-Man 3 which made $151.1 million. It does however have a chance to out-gross the original 2002 Spider-Man film which made $114.8 million on its opening weekend.
With strong a strong presence on social media, and acclaim from critics and fans, Homecoming should have no problem out-grossing all previous films with the famous web crawler even when hitting theatres in the same month as War for the Planet of the Apes, Dunkirk and Despicable Me 3.
