20th Century Fox Re-thinking the Future of the ‘Alien’ Franchise

Written By: Nick Poulimenakos

Alien’s prequel franchise has been met with… we’ll say more of a mixed response thus far. Ever since the premiere of Prometheus, fans have been clamoring for the origins of the famous monster that made its debut way back in 1979. Ridley Scott returned to cinemas this year with the anticipated sequel, Alien: Covenant. The film promised to detail where the Xneomorph came from and this first humans to come in contact with it. Unfortunately, critics and fans weren’t exactly sold on the film and it garnered mixed-to-positive reviews and a lower box office gross. Now it would seem that 20th Century FOX is rethinking their plans for this franchise.

In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, sources are saying that Fox is reassessing the two proposed sequels to Covenant that will reportedly lead right up to Ellen Ripley’s story in the first Alien. The two sequels would be directed by Ridley Scott and speculation points to Michael Fassbender returning as the villainous David.

As stated, Alien: Covenant was seen as more of a disappointment. The film raked in $232.3 million at the worldwide box office (much less than Prometheus’ $400 million haul) and witnessed a massive 71% drop off in its second weekend.

Ridley Scott has stated in the past that he has a story already in mind about the future of this franchise. Originally, his idea was to create a five to six prequel film series but, after Covenant’s premiere, said he’s got one or two sequels up his sleeve. Additionally, the next film in the Alien franchise had plans to film in 2018 with a release date of early 2020 in mind.

On top of that, there was actually an Alien sequel that was set to be made. District 9 director Neill Blomkamp had plans for an Alien 5 but they were scrapped in favour of Scott’s prequel series. Blomkamp’s film was rumored to be a sequel to Aliens and ignore the events of Alien 3 and Ressurection. If Fox doesn’t want to continue making prequels, and still wants to continue the Alien franchise, maybe its time to revive Blomkamp’s film and get Sigourney Weaver back in the role that made her a household name.
