Matt Reeves on How His Batman Film will Differ from ‘The Dark Knight’

I think it’s safe to assume that the DCEU film fans are arguably looking forward to the most is Matt Reeves’ Batman film. The director, who is on a hot streak right now after helming one of the best films of the year, War for the Planet of the Apes, is now discussing what exactly his film will be like and it sounds as if Reeves is trying to make a tonally different movie when compared to The Dark Knight,

Recently, Reeves appeared on Kim Masters’ podcast The Business (via Screen Rant) where he talked about how The Batman will differ from The Dark Knight.

The Dark Knight, which I think is an incredible movie, the thing that really resonates about that is The Joker … his story and that performance, and everything about the filmmaking that relates to that character – it’s his (Heath Ledger’s) movie.”

“I think Christian Bale is great, but I think that that movie movie really resonated with everyone because of that character (The Joker), its portrayal, and the way that the movie presented his unsettling perspective and the way that crashed up against Batman. I think I am interested in being even more inside of Batman.”

Reeves is not wrong. The Dark Knight is usually called the greatest superhero film of all time and one of the main reasons for that is because of Heath Ledger’s phenomenal performance as the clown prince of crime. It brought back a sense of stardom to the character after not being seen in a Batman film since 1989. But Reeves wants his film to focus on the caped crusader, set apart from the greater DC Extended Universe.

Now, that last sentence shouldn’t worry you. I wrote it because Reeves also said in another recent interview:

“When they approached me, what they said was, ‘Look, it’s a standalone. This isn’t part of the Extended Universe.”

Now, it obviously can be assumed that Reeves’ Batman film could take place in this new DC film franchise that is being planned apart from the DCEU that is being kicked off with a Joker origin film. But I believe Reeves is just saying that the film will be more of a self-contained story, similar to Marvel’s Doctor Strange, that had small references to the larger world, but really focused on Strange and his story. Reeves wants to focus on Batman and flesh out his character the way he sees fit. One thing is for sure though, Ben Affleck is staying on as Batman. Stop worrying.

Catch Ben Affleck as Batman in Zack Synder’s Justice League which premieres on November 17, 2017.
