Disney resident under sea princess has been cast!
Today, singer Halle Bailey, best known for being part of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, will play Princess Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The casting decision was reportedly made today, with Bailey being notified yesterday morning.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” says Marshall.
Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina have already nabbed the roles of Ursula, Flounder, and Scuttle respectively. Rob Marshall is set to direct, after helming the studio’s sequel to Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns. David Magee wrote the script.
For the remake of the classic Disney feature, Alan Menken will team with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the music. Miranda is producing the film alongside Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on MPR and executive produced Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin remake.
Bailey is best known as one-half of the twin-sister R&B duo Chloe x Halle, who signed to Beyonce’s Parkwood Entertainment label after gaining popularity with their YouTube covers. She also stars alongside her sister in the Freeform sitcom Grown-ish.
